“With the football season behind us, many boaters are now starting to prepare for warmer weather, getting their boats in the water, making upgrades and purchases, and planning trips,” according to CMTA Executive Director, Kathleen Burns.

The CMTA reports that Connecticut boasts a wealth of water access,  including 618 miles of tidal shoreline, 180 inland lakes, and hundreds of miles of rivers, all offering residents varied opportunities to get involved in recreational boating.

Many new exhibitors represent the “lifestyle” or “soft goods” product category within the boating industry.

“This year’s show really has something for every type of boater in Connecticut, from those who fish in our rivers or enjoy skiing on our lakes, to those who cruise or sail the sound, and even those who want to charter a boat,” said Burns. “And, with the expansion of our Lifestyle section on the upper level, even non-boaters will find a variety of nautically inspired products to get them thinking about warmer water activities,” she continued.

Throughout The Hartford Boat Show, visitors will have the opportunity to see the amazing SeaBreacher Killer Whale boat, which actually jumps out of the water and dives back under by nearly ten feet; test their skills at the Virtual Fishing Tournament; take the Blackhawk Fishing Charters Fighting Chair Challenge, attend seminars presented by the Annapolis School of Seamanship, the New London Maritime Society, Three Belles Marina and Black Hawk Fishing Charters; watch paddle board demonstrations in the Paddler’s Paradise Pool,  and follow the remote controlled flying fish of Air Swimmers.

Boating Personalities and Special Guests to Appear Throughout February 9-12 Event

ESSEX,CT—February 1, 2017 – Shelby Ebert, The Fastest Woman on Water, and Kristin Smoyer, the North American Pro Ladies Flyboard Champion are among the boating personalities appearing at the February 9-12 Hartford Boat Show at the Connecticut Convention Center.  Both Ebert and Smoyer will be discussing their accomplishments, and meeting visitors during The Show’s hours on February 11 and 12. At 21 years old, Ebert is the only professional woman driver to run the entire Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series, and the youngest ever, having won five world championships, with three by the time she was 20. She started racing jet skis at the age of 13, and in 2016 moved into Pro Modified as the only professional woman driver, and is proving to be a role model for young women racers.

Doing back flips while flying 40 feet in the air above water is testament to the athleticism and fearlessness of Kristin Smoyer when she competes for Team Powerfly in hydroflying on the flyboard. Her energy and determination above water have earned her the nickname “Smoyer – The Destroyer,” and numerous championship titles throughout the world.

“Having Shelby and Kristin at the show this year reinforces what we’ve seen happening in the marine trades in Connecticut , which is the emergence of women in top roles, such as Lynn Oliver who is the director of marketing for the  Brewer Marina organization. Captains Wendy Sears and Angela Moore at Sea Tow, Captain Dawn Schieferdecker at Tow Boat U.S. (American Boating Services), and Tasha Cusson at Atlantic Outboard,” said Kathleen Burns, Executive Director, CMTA.

Our Piece of the Pie of Hartford, is a non-profit  urban youth development agency offering a relationship-centered approach to help young people access and attain a mix of the educational, employment, and personal skills that contribute to their success. Based in Beacon Falls, the mission of Oil Drum Art is to promote artwork that advocates reduced petroleum consumption for a more livable planet. Its Cat-Fish II catamaran project designed a catamaran that used recycled 55 gallon oil drums for pontoons, with the first prototype being built by Hartford High School students as part of an Our Piece of the Pie program. Cat-Fish II will sail its first humanitarian trip, 2,250-miles along the Intercoastal Waterway from Connecticut to Florida and then Haiti where it will be donated to the Aquin fishing village to help improve gathering of fish from deeper waters. Cedar Island Research Laboratory in Clinton educates the public on local marine issues and expands the knowledge of Long Island Sound and the organisms that reside there. It conducts research studies on both invasive species and species lacking current scientific exploration, and monitors water quality in order to demonstrate the ever-improving health of Long Island Sound.
